The heart of the city of San Diego – downtown and the surrounding areas – gleams and glistens with new high rises and towers. It also is home to a number of carefully restored vintage buildings notable for their intricate facades and window treatments. The mix of old and new gives downtown its unique character and remarkable skyline.
Facing the bay, downtown San Diego overlooks a busy Embarcadaro; Lindbergh Field, the airport; and an ever-changing parade of Navy, civilian ships and pleasure craft. Additionally, the Convention Center sits on the edge of the bay under a dramatic roof of sails.
The Gaslamp Quarter is steps away from the Convention Center and offers a variegated mix of restaurants and nightlife. The 16.5-block neighborhood, listed in the National Register of Historic Places, contains 94 historically and architecturally significant structures. The district now houses more than 70 restaurants and nightclubs as well as movie theaters, shops, offices, galleries, apartments and lofts. And by opening day 2004, Petco Park will be open for San Diego Padres’ baseball games.
Horton Plaza, which mimics an Italian hill town in its architecture, opened in 1985 and occupies six-and-one-half blocks in the heart of downtown. It includes more than 130 shops, several restaurants, a multiscreen movie theater, and the 750-seat Lyceum Theatre, which is home to the San Diego Repertory Theatre.
The Westin Horton Plaza hotel is located next door to the plaza so guests are in close proximity to shopping and restaurants. The U.S. Grant is across the street and one of the oldest hotels in San Diego. There are also a number of condominiums available in the 15-block area for those who want to live in the heart of San Diego.
Little Italy is central San Diego’s oldest continuous neighborhood business district, and is currently one of the fastest growing areas of the city. The area is rich in Italian restaurants, shops stocked with Italian imports, galleries and other boutiques that cater to residents and tourists. More than $3 million of improvements have gone into India Street, the main commercial artery, and new mixed-use buildings are going up to provide space for commercial establishments and homeowners.
Functioning as the recreational heart of the city of San Diego is Balboa Park. The park’s attractions include the world famous San Diego Zoo, the open-air Starlight Bowl, The Old Globe Theatre, a replica of the 16th-century Elizabethan Globe Theatre, a number of museums and acres of scenery for walking and hiking. Other attractions include a Japanese friendship garden, a carousel, an organ pavilion and a miniature railroad.
