SPOTLIGHT ON SANTEE
 
Santee Trolley Square     
Santee’s business climate is forging ahead thanks to its location and its convenient proximity to all areas of the county. The town center consists of 706 acres master planned for mixed use, and it is thriving. It also helps that Santee has the highest median household income of the East County cities and one of the lowest crime rates.

The centerpiece of the city’s current prosperity is Santee Trolley Square, a mixed-use project built around the terminus of the trolley line that runs from downtown to Santee. Trolley Square is 95 percent complete and 95 percent leased with tenants that include Target, TJ Maxx, Bed, Bath & Beyond and Staples. New restaurants that call Trolley Square home include Mimi’s, Olive Garden and Chilis. Other amenities include a 250-seat amphitheater and a food court.

In addition to retail stores and restaurants, Trolley Square is the site of a 104 acre corporate office park. The first phase of this project is completed, and Hartford Financial Services has moved its offices and 500 employees to the building.

Retail is also the centerpiece of another 250,000 square foot development currently under construction and located on Mission Gorge Road. Kohl’s and Lowe’s Home Improvement stores will anchor this center that will open in the early fall of 2004.

The Santee Plaza/Promenade is anchored by Wal-Mart, Costco and Home Depot. It is one of the highest grossing centers in San Diego County.

The Wheatlands Industrial Park is 90,000 square feet of space and is home to Alt’s Tool and Machine. The company makes turbine engine parts and does other types of milling and fabrication. Manufacturers like the area for its skilled work force and available land.

Santee’s success is partly due to its easy access to freeways and transportation. Highway 52 links the community to interstate 15 and points west. State Route 125 links the community to the South County. An extension of SR-52 that will connect the freeway to Cuyamaca Street is projected to open in 2006. The trolley links Santee to downtown. A connection to state Route 67 is projected for completion in 2008. These ongoing infrastructure improvements will open up new opportunities for the community’s businesses.
