Striving to maintain its enviable high quality lifestyle and support a strong local economy, Carlsbad carefully plans its development. The city’s award- winning growth management plan and long-term commitment to infrastructure have made Carlsbad a desirable location for new and expanding businesses. The city government maintains a close relationship with the new businesses in order to facilitate local economic growth through its Business Assistance Program.
Carlsbad’s business center encompasses 2,500 acres in the central corridor of the city. It is a compact group of business parks featuring light manufacturing, research and development, communications and corporate headquarters, along with other types of high technology and biotechnology industries.
Major employers in Carlsbad are the city government, auto malls and golf equipment manufacturers. Thanks to its prominent retail golf suppliers and a wide range of golf parks, the city has earned the title of the Golf Capital of the World. Luxurious resorts and other unique tourist attractions make Carlsbad an ideal destination for the resort tourism industry. Carlsbad Car Country is one of the premier auto malls in Southern California.
Legoland California is the only park of its type in the United States. Recently, Legoland completed a 16,000-square-foot expansion that includes a new ride and an interactive sports center. With tourism suffering since the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, Legoland is focusing on drive-marketing aimed at bringing tourists from Northern California, Las Vegas and Phoenix. Other attractions include the flamboyant flower fields and the Carlsbad Village Art and Antique Mall.
Carlsbad is experiencing booming residential growth; the city has vacant land to accommodate the high growth and projects that sometime beyond the year of 2010, there will be about 54,599 residential units housing approximately 135,000 residents. Many of these residences are being built in master-planned communities with a range of amenities.
Like other coastal cities, the flow of pollutants from storm drains into creeks and lagoons is always a concern. Carlsbad must comply with clean water rules set by the State Water Quality Board. As part of its compliance, the city recently completed a multimillion-dollar reworking of the storm drains in downtown Carlsbad, one of the largest capital projects ever undertaken by the city.
