Located 18 miles inland and 30 miles northeast of San Diego, Escondido is a small town with a business-friendly environment. The city plan supports private investment and quality development. Currently, the Mercado project is revitalizing historic downtown Escondido and Centre City Parkway. Other city programs that encourage business include the Business Retention and Expansion Program (BREP) and the Facade and Property Improvement Program (FPIP). Escondido has invested over $855,000 in grant funds to improve the appearance of its businesses and their surrounding areas.
Escondido has been named the Best Place in the West to retire by Money Magazine. The city has also been named a “Kid-Friendly City” and recognized for its broad range of youth programs. The city was the only San Diego County city to be given a “Very Low-Cost City” rating by the 2003 Kosmont Cost of Doing Business Survey. The ranking is based on local business taxes, utility user taxes and property taxes. The rating recognizes Escondido as a city that fosters economic development and works to attract businesses.
The business center of Escondido is a compact group of commercial, retail, service and offices clustered around City Hall and the Arts Center. An official “Antique District” was completed in 1997. It is a tourist attraction encompassing 28 antiques, art and specialty shops. The district also includes several gourmet restaurants.
A $200,000 public art project is underway to embellish the Parkway’s shopping district. The landmark art pieces are the work of nationally-recognized glass artist Joan Irving. A 16-plex stadium seating movie theater is rising on the old Montgomery Ward site and the new Gateway Center, next to the transportation center, opened in March 2003. The Mingei International Museum satellite facility is nearing completion and will open later in 2003. The Escondido Research and Technology Center (ERTC) will add between 4,000 and 5,000 high-paying jobs for Escondido and surrounding area residents.
Like other North County cities, rapid urban growth is a concern to Escondido residents. Currently on the drawing boards are plans for higher density housing in its urban areas and an east-west light rail link to connect Escondido to Oceanside.
Other businesses that call Escondido home include the San Diego Zoo’s Wild Animal Park and Orfila Vineyards, both located southeast of downtown.
