SPOTLIGHT ON POWAY

Train at Old Poway Park
Poway’s central location mid-county on Interstate-15 and 20 miles northeast of downtown San Diego makes it a strategic location for businesses. Poway was rated No. 6 in business growth in California by Outlook Magazine. The South Poway Business Park is linked to I-15 by six-lane Scripps Poway Parkway and contains 313 businesses.

The 700-acre park is located in the southwestern part of the city and is home to 11,119 employees. Recently the city of Poway rezoned part of the area from light industrial to commercial, making it possible for large-scale retail to locate in the park. Currently Staples and Kohl’s department store are signed up to open in the district. Costco and Lowe’s will be opening stores in the near future.

The city would also like to add a hotel to its commercial mix and is in talks to bring an extended stay-type hotel to the area that would provide meeting rooms and conference capabilities. Poway would also like to add restaurants to the area.

In addition to the Business Park, Poway is working hard to strengthen its other retail districts through city and private investment. Downtown revitalization of the area along Poway Road is under way energized by the town’s “Road to Success” program and the Poway Road Specific Plan. Poway Road is divided into four districts by the plan and addresses each area’s specific concerns.

One of the first projects – the rehabilitation of an outdated strip mall into a modern facility – was completed in March, 2003. The $5 million project benefited from a $900,000 loan from the Poway Redevelopment Agency. The Stein Mart shopping center is also slated for rehabilitation, adding Office Depot and four restaurants to the intersection at Midland and Poway Road. Other parts of the plan encourage redesign of other sections of the main retail area while preserving its small-town, small-scale environment.

A new master plan is being developed for the Old Poway Park area. Suggestions so far include an arts center, softball fields and affordable housing. Additional parking, sidewalks and more activities will also benefit the retail areas around the park which is considered the heart of Poway and residents want to expand its activities while preserving its unique attributes.

The city is known for its excellent school district, and it has the lowest crime rate in the county. Lake Poway and the Blue Sky Ecological Reserve provide plenty of recreational opportunities. The Poway Center for the Performing Arts brings live performances and drama to the city and a new state-of-the-art library opened recently as part of the Poway Road revitalization efforts.
