SPOTLIGHT ON NATIONAL CITY

National City Mile of Cars
As it heads into its third century, the business community in National City is varied and thriving. Located close to the Mexican border and offering shipping, rail and freeway access, San Diego County’s second oldest city is experiencing solid growth and is attracting new ventures and projects.

According to Edith Hughes, CEO of the Chamber of Commerce, National City is characterized by its hometown atmosphere and its many home-grown businesses. Businesses such as family-owned Niederfrank’s Ice Cream, founded in 1948 and Paradise Valley Hospital, founded by the Seventh Day Adventist Church in the early part of the 20th century, continue to thrive.

These companies co-exist with both The Pasha Group, a family-owned transportation services company that opened its National City branch in 1990, and the Mile of Cars, home to 22 new car dealers. The Mile of Cars leads San Diego in both volume of cars sold and dollar sales. Wal-Mart is opening a new store and there are three shopping malls. Three industrial parks house a number of businesses, and The Corky McMillan Companies are also headquartered in National City.

The Chamber of Commerce recently constructed a new building that will greatly increase the chamber’s ability to serve the community. Southwestern College and San Diego State University (SDSU) are about to break ground on a new facility called Education Village. Both projects are in the original downtown area of National City now under redevelopment. The city is also landscaping National City Boulevard, planting trees and flowers down the esplanade from one end of the city to the other.

Education Village is a partnership of Southwestern Community College and the San Diego County Office of Education. It will house the Higher Education Center (HEC) established in National City in 1998. The HEC provides lower division course work and educates students to move into the SDSU system.

When finished, the new facility will have 45,000 square-feet of space. The ground floor will have 10,000 square-feet of retail space, housing a bookstore and a cafe. Upper floors will house classrooms and San Diego’s only school of dental hygiene. There will also be a 500-space parking structure. SDSU is building 20,000 square feet of space, which will house a cybercafe, classrooms and room for training educators.

Naval Station San Diego, the largest Navy installation on the West Coast is part of the National City Marine Terminal, which extends for three miles along the bay. The facilities are part of the San Diego Unified Port District.

Knight & Carver YachtCenter is a good example of the kinds of companies that are finding National City an attractive place to do business. The company moved to its National City location five years ago from two locations in San Diego and was able to consolidate its new boat construction and its repair facility into one 9-acre site.

According to Sam Brown, Knight & Carver CEO, the move has been good for the business, which is thriving – the company now employs 170 people and will soon employ 200. “The government of National City has been very supportive and responsive to our needs,” Brown said. “They really want our business to stay in the area and provide jobs.”
